Yes, I am saying just that. I am
saying this because apparently many people do not know how dependent our
civilization is on plastic. What I intend doing with this post is to show how
penetrative plastic is in our lives- daily lives in particular. The motivating
philosophy is that many a people have taken plastic for granted, and therefore
carelessly think that plastic can take care of itself. Knowing the deepness of
penetration of plastic into our civilization may prod them into a rethink of
that position- of taking plastic for granted. The hope is that the consequent
rethink should lead to a proper handling of plastic for a further push for
clean and balanced natural environment.
I am going to throw light on the
penetration of plastic in our lives in the following intimate areas in the home,
in keeping with that hope:
Kitchen
Bathroom
Living room
Bedroom
KITCHEN
The kitchen is where you get your food in the home. Is it not so?
The kitchen is where food is prepared for you, and food is what you need to
sustain your physical life. Have you ever asked yourself how much of plastic
goes into this department of the home? As an answer to that question I give you
the following list of things which are fully plastic or partly plastic which find
their way into your kitchen or feature permanently in your kitchen:
Microwave oven
Microwavable bowls
Plastic cups
Plastic plates
Plastic cutlery
Plastic trays
Frying pan
Rice cooker
Blender
Heater
Cylinder (canister) tube
Jars

BATHROOM
Your bathroom is where you wash yourself in the morning to get
invigorated to face the day. The bathroom is where you shower to cool your
nerves to get a good night’s sleep. See how much plastic facilitate those
activities as follows:

your family and friends. Whether you are enjoying yourself with your family or

in the living room:

HOME- HEART OF SOCIETY
It has been said that: “There is no place like home”. The home is
where your heart is, or should be, all things being equal. You are born into
and raised in a home, ideally by both parents. Your home is where you develop
your roots on Planet Earth, before branching out. You wake up in your home, go
to work or go about other activities, but eventually you come back home to
start all over again the next day. The home is not only your root it is the focal
point of your life too. The home is the very first point of human resource
development for the society at large.
I have said all that to make it clearer how plastic has penetrated
the very heart of our society. Even in the home I have not touched on every
department, and generally. Take the house generally, the entire wiring of the
home to provide power has plastic components. Some of the items I have named
under one department, however, they may be moved from one department to another
one. Mobile phone is an example.
OUTSIDE
Out of your home wherever you go you see a manifestation of plastic
one way or the other. In your offices you come into contact with plastic. In
conferences, boardrooms, hotels, hospitals etc. plastic is used in one way or
the other. In public places there are plastic for both good and bad reasons. I
hope I have painted enough, though briefly, how penetrative plastic is.
PARTING SHOT
Plastic is so common in our lives that almost everybody has taken it
for granted. Once you take something for granted you turn to ignore the harm it
causes. Do not deceive yourself plastic is doing a lot of harm to the natural
environment, the very basis of the sustenance of human material life. The
problem is with how we as humans are managing the disposal of plastic which we
have created in the first place.
Most of the plastic we use are petroleum-based. However, organic
plastic which is environmentally friendly is coming up. We need more of organic
plastic and better management of the disposal of currently common plastic we
are using towards a clean and balanced natural environment.
