June 5 is world environment day. The
theme for 2017 is “Connecting people to Nature”. The idea is to let people know
how dependent they on nature. Also people are to appreciate the beauty and
value of nature.
I have indicated in one of my posts
that man is carved out of and sustained by the natural environment (nature).
Take a critical look at the life of man and its sustenance (at least in the
material sense). Where does a vital material like air needed to keep man alive
come from? Is it not the natural environment? Is it not tap from the natural
environment by inspiration? The food man needs to eat and eats to keep up
energy levels in the body, where does it come from? Is it not the natural
environment? The fruits, vegetables and nuts man takes in daily to preserve
life, where are they coming from? Outer space? No, certainly not! It is the
natural environment. Yes, the natural environment- natural environment
comprising of air, soil and water of planet Earth. Where do embryo get
nutrients to grow into a human being? Is it not the natural environment,
ultimately?
The natural environment then is of
such a vital critical importance, even if looking at it from the selfish
superficial and parochial interest of man only. Given the vital critical
importance of the natural environment, it stands to reason that each and every one
of the seven point five billion (7.5 billion) people or so that form the world
population ought to give valuation to the natural environment as such. If you value
something you do not misuse it.
One might say this is a straight
forward thing. Unfortunately it is not that easy. There are many doubting
Trumps in the mist of earthlings! Doubting Trumps because USA president Trump
doubts the activities of man is destabilizing the environmental balance to the
point of needing a COP 21 for redress. He just pull the United States of
America out of the Paris COP 21 Agreement. What makes this technically worrying
is that, in terms of quantity, the United States of America is the number two
country on planet Earth that emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (the
air man inhales), China being number one.
There are many doubting Trumps among
us. Some doubt out of ignorance. Some proffer knowledge that is contrary to the
generally accepted one. There are cutting edge scientists who think that rise
in global temperature is as a result of changes in the sun’s activity. Yet others
doubt anthropogenic (caused by humans) climate change for economic reasons.
One uplifting reaction to Trump’s
decision to pull USA out of COP 21 is that individual states in the USA like
New York and California have decided to individually ratify global climate
change programs. This is the spirit to follow to create a balanced natural
environment to maximize connectivity between man and nature.
