OUR DIRTY ENVIRONMENT- WHERE IT STARTS

It does not take much to find out how our natural environment is generally dirty. Our rivers, our source of drinking water, is dirty and poisoned. The air we breathe is dirty. The soil from which we get food to keep ourselves alive is dirty. I step out of my house into town and my path is strewn with dirt, mainly plastic waste- in open gutters, on the streets and islands between streets. Dirt has become a permanent feature of our natural environment. Not that nothing is being done about it. The point is that we have not been able to manage our waste well. Coping with waste management vary from place to place depending on varying reasons.
The question to ask is where does dirt mismanagement start from? I think it starts from the home. In the home when children for example, are given sweets they unwrap the sweet and drop the wrapper anywhere in the house except the dustbin. When soft drinks (soda) and beers are opened the crowns are left on the ground. What about opening the soft drinks and beers and taking the crowns to the dustbin right away. When some adults come home from work the sitting room is where they remove and leave their shoes and socks.

This apparently harmless deed (throwing waste around every which way) start small in children and as they grow it becomes an ingrained habit. The habit becomes so ingrained some think it is naturally an integral part of their personality. Keeping the natural environment clean, and for that matter sustainable, starts from the home. It may sound simplistic, but that is what it is. The home is the building block of society as a whole.
