FECES AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Feces is waste living organisms expel from their colon as a result of metabolism (processing of food eaten). A necessary body function.
Feces has many other names. Some of them are stool, excrement, poop, droppings and scat. The common slang for feces is shit.
Feces is made up of undigested food, bacteria, mucus, fluid and dead cells.
I know talking about this matter is not pleasant for many though it is an essential part of human life. Your very body is a manufacturer of feces.
Once you eat you have got to release the stuff. Some say as much as 50% of what you eat is released as feces. My beef is how we release and dispose of feces. In many parts of the world indiscriminate defecation is done. In my country for example, from the western tip of the coast to its eastern tip on the Atlantic Ocean, open defecation is done on the beaches. That manner of defecation is described as ‘free range’ by varsity students.
The feces released onto the beaches end up in the sea. In a television news, a fisherman at Chorkor or James Town  (Accra, Ghana) interviewed in connection with the issue said that sometimes they catch fish stained with feces. What they do is to wash their catch clean of feces before selling them.
The feces make the sea unpleasant to swim in, and contaminate living organism like the fish caught by the fishermen.

Feces has many good uses (including medicinal uses), but it can also be dangerous if it is not properly handled.  While it is a good source of food for some living organism, bacteria in it can spread diseases.
